Jennifer's Story

My baby is 10 months old now. She was born in the peace and safety of our home. Immediately after her birth I held her to my breast, but she was more interested in looking at the world. About an hour later my friend reminded me that “She needs her milkies!” And we have been going strong ever since.

I am a nurse, and come from a family of breastfeeders, and a legacy of friends who breastfeed. There are no bottles in my house, no formula, no pacifiers. I am very proud that I “grew” my baby with the milk I made for her.

When our baby was little, my husband wondered how long I would breastfeed for. Now he knows that at LEAST two years is recommended by the World Heath Organization. When we are asked about our baby he proudly tells people that “she breastfeeds!” He comes home with stories about breastfeeding and asks his friends at work if they need my support when they have babies of their own.

We have breastfed at the mall, on a plane, in restaurants, Eskimos games, Oilers games, high school sports, church, the bus, at my husband’s work, at my workplace, at a military parade, at a craft store, at the movie theatre, at the bank, music class, baby group, the Edmonton Women’s show, in the park, and at the gym, just to name a few.

Yesterday I bought her a new shirt. It’s pink, and plain, but it will soon have a “still breastfeeding” logo added to it. She will wear it proudly!
