Breast Friends in Edmonton
All About This Program
Many new breastfeeding moms stop breastfeeding earlier than they and baby want to due to lack of support, and lack of helpful information. Much advice that is given by the health care community is wrong, or "old school" thinking.
"Breast Friends" is a volunteer group that has been organized to help moms and babies get off to the best breastfeeding start possible. The volunteers in the support group are not licensed lactation consultants, but are experienced breastfeeding moms who have probably been through many of the same challenges and difficulties as you have.
"Breast Friends" is for:
- pregnant moms who would like information on preparing for breastfeeding
- new moms who are having trouble with breast and nipple pain, latching, or other nursing difficulties
- nursing moms who have questions about nursing strikes, thrush, sleeping and nursing patterns, weight gain, supplementing and bottles
- attachment parents who are looking for peer support
If you and your baby would like some help, no matter how big or small, you can contact Karen at BLISS, and you will be matched up with one of the volunteer "Breast Friends".
Breastfeeding Friends offer:
- phone calls
- email contact
- home visits, if required
- answers to your questions
- a shoulder to cry on
- brochures and helpful website links to help you in your time of need
- a friend who knows what you are going through
If at any time, your Breast Friend feels the breastfeeding issue should be discussed with a doctor or lactation consultant, a referral to a health care professional will be made.
There is no charge for any BLISS services. All programs are provided and organized by volunteers.
As well, if you are interested in becoming a volunteer Breast Friend to offer peer support to new breastfeeding moms and babies, please contact Karen at BLISS
